  1. Go to the official portal of GST
    Official website for GST is www.GST.gov.in and you need to type this on your search bar. Click on the search button.

    GST official portal will be displayed on your screen.
    You can easily spot ‘Services’ on the bar at top of the portal then go to ‘Registration’ option on your screen. Click on ‘Registration’.
  1. Go to new registration
    After clicking on ‘Registration’, you will see various options displayed on your screen. Then click on ‘New Registration’.
  1. Fill your details
    Panel for new registration will get displayed on your screen. You have to fill your details under different sections.
    All mandatory fields that are necessary to be filled are marked with a red coloured dot ‘ • ‘.
    1. You have to select ‘New Registration’ from two options given at the top of the form.
    2. Then you have to proceed to ‘I am a ‘. You will see a bar from where you can select your option. 9 options will be available and you have to choose one out of them.
    3. You have to choose among options of taxpayer, tax deductor, tax collector, GST practitioner, non resident taxable person, united nation body, non resident online service provider,consultant or embassy of foreign country and other notified person.
    4. In the next step you have to provide the name of the state or union territory. Select your district in this step.
    5. You have to mention the name of your business as it is written on the PAN card of business.
    6. This is a mandatory step and you have to mention your PAN number which is of 10 digits.
    7. You have to write your email ID carefully as you will receive OTP on this ID which will be used in further steps of registration.
    8. You have to enter your phone number correctly to receive an OTP for verification of a mobile number.
    9. At last, you will have to enter captcha and click on ‘Proceed’.

  1. Login into your account with TRN
    After verification of your phone number and email id, you will receive a temporary reference number (TRN).

Keep it safe with you as you have to use it in the next step. Login into your account with temporary reference number and temporary password provided to you.

Enter TRN and then enter captcha code in space provided and then click on proceed.

  1. Complete your verification
    You have to complete OTP verification. OTP is sent to the mobile number and email id entered by you in previous steps.
    After completing your verification, GST registration page will be displayed on your screen.

  1. Fill your business details
    Details provided by you are saved as drafts. You have to click on ‘edit’. Under this step you have to give your business details.
    1. You have to enter the name of your business or company in the given section.
    2. Then enter PAN details.
    3. Mention name of state or union territory in which you have your business.
    4. Mention the date of commencement of business.
    5. Give details about already existing registrations.
    6. Mention details about your business partners. You can mention your 10 business partners at maximum.
    7. While registering for a proprietorship firm, you have to provide details of proprietors. Mention your personal details, DIN (Director Identification Number), write your designation, mention your PAN details and aadhar details.
    8. Mention details of the person you have given permission to file your return.
    9. Enter contact details of your business and principal place of business.
    10. Enter additional places where you have your business. Give information about that business like details of goods supplied by your company.
    11. Provide information about bank account details of your company and related proofs.
    12. You need to upload your scanned documents. Documents vary for different types of businesses. Different documents are used for registering under proprietorship, private limited company and partnership LLP. So, you have to provide documents as per your business type.
    13. You have to upload scanned documents of your photograph, bank account details, business related proofs and authorised forms.
  1. Click on ‘Save and Continue’
    After completing all the above mentioned steps you have to click on the ‘Save and Continue’ option which is displayed on your screen.
    You have to do this because you will need the information filled and saved by you in further steps of registration.
  2. Click on Submit
    After clicking on the ‘Save and Continue’ option you have to click on ‘Submit’ to save your details. DSC should be used by companies for submitting their application.
    OTP for verification will be sent to your mobile number registered in your aadhaar card if you use e-sign for submitting your application. You can use EVC for form submission to get OTP on your mobile number registered under GST.
  3. Success Message
    After submitting your application form a success message will be displayed on your screen.
  1. You will receive your application reference number (ARN)
    You will get your ARN. Note down your application reference number which is generated for you.
  2. Check your application reference number status
    At last you should check your ARN status. You can do this by entering ARN on the official website of GST.

What is a TRN Number?

TRN stands for temporary reference number.

This reference number is of 9 digits.

Temporary reference number is valid only for temporary use and you can use it till you complete your registration process.

This is sent after completing verification of your email id and mobile number.

You have to use your TRN for logging in to your account and for completing your process of application.

What is an ARN Number?

ARN stands for application reference number.

You will get a unique application reference number after every transaction on GST portal.

You will also get ARN after filling all the necessary details and submitting your application form.

ARN consists of 15 digits.

First two digits of ARN number represent alphabets, the next two are state codes, 5th and 6th digits denote month of transaction and 7th and 8th digits are for the year of transaction.

Next six digits represent system generated code and the last and 15th digit is a check sum digit.

Compliance After Getting Registered Under GST

After completing registration under GST you are liable to follow norms of GST.

You have to submit your returns for GST within the due time.

If you are a normal taxpayer then you have to file monthly returns.

Yearly returns and quarterly returns are also needed to be filed by you on time.

If you are registered under composition scheme then you have to file your returns on quarterly basis and you don’t have to give monthly returns.

Penalties Related To Negligence of GST Registration

Everyone who fulfills the eligibility criteria of GST registration must get registered.

Failing to do so may lead you to bad consequences.

Not registering under GST even if you are liable to do so is a punishable offence. You shall be charged with a heavy penalty.

Penalty that is charged is cited below:

1. If you Mistakenly not Registered for GST

If a person who should get registered for GST has not registered himself mistakenly or due to some confusion then he is liable to pay a penalty.

Penalty rate for this is decided as 10% of the total tax unpaid.

For example, if you have registered late and the total tax unpaid by you is Rs.10000 then you have to pay a penalty of Rs.1000.

You can only pay your returns after paying the penalty.

2. If You Intentionally Didn’t Registered Yourself

If a person who should get registered for GST has not registered himself with deliberate planning of doing fraud then this is an offence.

You may be sent to jail. You also have to pay a penalty which is 100% of the unpaid tax due to late registration.

For example, if you have unpaid tax of Rs.10,000 then you have to pay a penalty of Rs.10,000.

What is the composition scheme in GST?

Composition scheme is a special system of taxation designed for small taxpayers who face financial difficulties in paying tax.
For taxpayers who are registered under composition schemes the tax rates are fixed between 1% to 6 % of their annual income.
A person whose annual financial turnover is less than Rs. 1 crore according to the old information and it should be less than Rs. 1.5 crore for goods according to the latest update can register into a composition scheme.
While annual turnover for services should be less than Rs.50 lakh.
Small manufacturers and traders like shopkeepers, food service providers, truck operators, fruit and vegetable sellers, those who have repairing shops and others can apply for this.
Restaurants that serve alcohol cannot apply for this. Taxpayers have to file their return quarterly while a normal taxpayer has to file 3 returns in a month.
Composition dealers don’t get any ITC benefits that is no tax input is credited to them.
Taxpayers under composition schemes cannot issue tax invoices to their customers.

GST practitioner is a person who assists other taxpayers in GST related works through online as well as offline modes.
It is mandatory for a GST practitioner to possess a GST certificate. That person must be registered under GST.

What is a GST number?

Use this temporary reference number to login into your account.
Go to drafts and click on ‘edit’. Mention of permanent and additional place of your business, bank account and pan card details related to business.
Mention details of your business partners.
Upload scanned photographs and mandatory documents according to your business type. Click on ‘Save and Continue’.
Then click on ‘Submit’ and a success message will be displayed on your screen.
You will receive ARN at email and phone number.
